Our Mission

Long Beach Organic (LBO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable organic gardening practices and local food production in an urban environment.

We have roots.
LBO was founded in 1994 by long- time community activist Charles Moore with the vision of turning vacant urban lots into viable organic gardens. Today the vision of LBO extends to the creation of school gardens and educational programs, a thriving organic nursery, as well as a community resource center for those interested in pursuing organic gardening and supporting local organic farms.

In urban areas, where our connection to the land that sustains us is easily forgotten, LBO seeks to promote the connection to our food, water, air, and natural environment. LBO employs a variety of strategies to attain this goal. Our strategies include:

  • Development, maintenance, and management of low-fee or no-fee organic community gardens in vacant lots around Long Beach;
  • Teaching organic production principles to students through school gardening programs;
  • Providing and promoting organic plant stocks to the community through the maintenance of an organic nursery and plant sales at local retail venues;
  • Providing volunteer opportunities for community members;
  • Publishing an informational and educational newsletter and maintaining a website;
  • Promoting organic gardening and consumption of food from local organic farmers through direct outreach at public events, as well as volunteer opportunities at local farms;
  • Providing organic gardening methods classes to community members;
  • Partnerships with like-minded organizations.

LBO members receive a 10% discount at our nursery and our quarterly newsletter, Organic Times, featuring

  • organic gardening advice for city dwellers;
  • updates on LBO's large-scale projects;
  • volunteer opportunities in LBO's gardens & for special events;
  • contact information for grass-roots activism.
